Case Study

Operating model design & solution evaluation for a rapidly growing investment manager

Strategy | Asset, Investment & Wealth Management | London

The Background

  • A UK investment management business was planning to increase its Assets Under Management (AUM) through acquisitions and organic growth
  • In order to support the planned growth, the business needed to replace their existing internally developed system as it was not considered scalable
  • NextWave was engaged by the Chief Technology and Transformation Officer (CTTO) to carry out an evaluation of potential vendor solutions and to design the target operating model for the business

The Challenge

  • The business had previously started a project to replace their current system with vendor solutions – however, the implementation had been paused due to concerns from key stakeholders
  • Whilst detailed requirements had been gathered from business areas as part of the previous project, the evaluation of the vendor systems had not been completed and other important elements of the target operating model had not been defined

The Approach

  • Meetings with the Chief Investment Officer (CTTO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and other senior executives to discuss the business strategy, current challenges and objectives
  • Review of the functional architecture and organisation model
  • Analysis of potential vendor solutions to produce a recommendation
  • Design of the target state processes, systems and organisation through workshops and discussions with representatives from the relevant business areas

The Impact

  • Three months to analyse the potential vendor solutions and complete the design of the Target Operating model
  • Recommendations on choice of vendor solutions approved by ExCo members
  • Target operating model design well received by ExCo members, including the CEO
  • Agreement from senior stakeholders to recommence the systems implementation project
